Sunday in New York
Almost every girl I know wants to get married. And has a plan to do it. We are fed since infancy with love stories and believe that our life will be a fairy tale with a prince charming that will come and swipe us up from our feet.
The problem comes along the way when we realize that the guy we fell for is no prince charming and has zero intentions of swiping us of our feet unless to carry us to the bedroom for a one night stand. But since women are classically stubborn and in strong denial, most end up believing that they can transform the frog into a prince. What they manage to do is transform themselves from Snow-white to Pretty woman.
'Sunday in New York' is a classic comedy centered along young women morality in the sixties and men's attitude towards it, from both a feminine and a masculine perspective. The cast is outstanding. Jane Fonda plays the role of Eileen, the 'probably last 22-year-old virgin' from Albany coming to New York to visit her brother Adam, played by Cliff Robertson. Adam is an airline pilot with a very loose morale that he wants to keep hidden from his sister towards whom he plays the role of a virtuous brother. Eileen is suffering from her breakup with Ross, her boyfriend for many years. She loves Ross and wants to marry him but he does not propose and pushes her for a physical relationship that she does not feel comfortable with.
Assured by her brother that sex is not what all men want, she wanders around the city where she meets Mike, played by Rod Taylor, on a bus and decide to have fun for herself. Needless to say that things do not go as planned. Murphy is having a field day on that Sunday in New York, playing with Eileen and Mike's romantic try-outs as well as with Adam's date with Mona who has an insane amount of unexpected interruptions and complications. Ross pops up unexpectedly and all hell breaks loose.
I saw the movie almost twenty years ago, and it was a pleasant surprise. Last year came out on DVD which gave me the opportunity to see it again.
